Textile- Sizing Machine
The textile industry uses chemicals for different applications like dyeing, bleaching, printing, finishing etc. In the sizing process the most commonly used mediums are starch, CMC, CMS and PVA. Mixtures of the former mediums and other chemical components are also used.
Before the yarn can be woven it must be strengthened to last the rapid movements in the weaving machine. For this purpose the yarn goes through a sizing bath that contains the sizing medium, water and some special additives depending on the recipe. Before inserting the sizing medium to the machine tank it has to be mixed to the right concentration. If starch is used, then the mixture has to be cooked before the medium can be inserted in the machine tanks. Usually the cooking or mixing station is close to the sizing machine and serves several sizing lines.
After mixing the product is pumped to a product tank. From there it is moved to an intermediate tank where the sizing liquid is mixed to the right concentration before inserting the medium into the machine circulation. Intermediate tanks are equipped with a load cell to enable the making of correct amount of sizing liquid for the required batch. The product after the cooking is typically 16-18% yarn and at the intermediate tanks it is 6-10% yarn. Some recycled sizing medium is sometimes added together with water to get the right concentration for the specific yarn.
After this Process yarn in wound on the Big Bobbin. This yarn has to be wound with equivalent torque and uniform Line speed until bobbin is fully wounded. For this purpose, peoples were using Torque motor keeping the constant torque and the speed was varied manually with variable regulator.
Role of VFD in Sizing machine
Now with the changing technology this winding application executed with variable speed drive, which is use in torque control mode.
Variable Frequency drive is connected to Winder motor, which is in Torque control mode. A feedback with Load cell is taken as feedback from winderMachine to calculate the amount of Load and torque. This input is directly given to the Drive as an analog in which is assigned a feedback input in drive.
As drive is in torque control mode it will adjust the frequency to maintain the tension on yarn. It will also make sure that it doesn’t over speed so that yarn breaks.
When the bobbin gets heavier drive get feedback from load sensor and drive adjust output torque accordingly.

Sizing of the warp yarn is essential to reduce breakage of the yarn and thus production stops on the weaving machine. On the weaving machine, the warp yarns are subjected to several types of actions i.e. cyclic strain, flexing, abrasion at various loom parts and inter yarn friction.
